{"id":1197,"date":"2012-08-01T14:44:58","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T14:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/?p=1197"},"modified":"2012-10-02T19:42:32","modified_gmt":"2012-10-02T19:42:32","slug":"virtualization-in-an-industrial-environment-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/?p=1197","title":{"rendered":"Virtualization in an Industrial Environment (Part 3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ThinManager-Logo-144.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1514\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ThinManager-Logo-144.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a>This is the third and final part of our three part series focusing on the entire process of Virtualizing in an industrial environment. \u00a0While there is a lot of talk about Virtualizing and VDI, we wanted to focus on the viability and deployment of Virtualization in an industrial and manufacturing environment which would speak to the concerns and difficulties specific to this industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 3: Managing Your Environments?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Part 2 of this series, we discussed whether or not Virtualization is necessary once you\u2019ve centralized, and, if it is, how far do you go.\u00a0For most System Administrators,\u00a0 RDS is the easiest and most cost effective place to begin.\u00a0 The need to only install OS\u2019s and applications once, and having them deploy to multiple clients, can provide enough time savings and reduced administrative headaches that Virtualization could very well just be an added cost to a system that already does everything the end user requires.<\/p>\n<p>In Part 3 we explore the best way to manage all of the environments and machines being used in your facilities.\u00a0 While adding virtualized components as part of a larger system adds features and can reduce costs related to down time (in the case of using a Virtualized Terminal Server to test planned upgrades before deployment), the customer must realize that they will need to dedicate manpower and resources to effectively manage these components.\u00a0 This is where ThinManager truly comes into play and can offer fully centralized management for all of your environments.<\/p>\n<p>As previously discussed,\u00a0 VDI will more than likely see limited, if any, use in an industrial or Industrialized Manufacturing environment\u2026especially as you move into your larger deployments.\u00a0 Regardless of what VDI can bring to the table, it is not viable to manage two hundred operating systems on one hundred machines (virtualized desktop and machine OS) spread across a manufacturing facility with multiple satellite locations or areas with environmental restrictions and limited planned downtime for maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>While these virtualized platforms allow for centralized management of the server, they provide no management of the end user device.\u00a0 The \u201cBig Three\u201d (VMWare, HyperV, and Xen) are all great solutions for the delivery portion of the Virtualization equation, they do their job quite admirably.\u00a0 But that \u201cback end\u201d style of system management and application delivery doesn\u2019t allow for management of even the most simple of client functions.\u00a0 How do you power up those clients, or get them online, or tell them what to run?\u00a0 What about client side functions?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1203\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 847px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.07-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1203 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.07-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"837\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.07-PM.png 837w, https:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.07-PM-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 837px) 100vw, 837px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">A &quot;Big Three&quot; Network configuration. As you can see, all of the management (Indicated by red rings) is focused on the Terminal Servers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The diagram above shows the architecture of the \u201cBig Three\u201d, which is designed to add applications to the centralized system and deliver it with no regard or thought for the end user device.\u00a0 There is no client management.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1204\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 846px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.44-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1204   \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.44-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"836\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.44-PM.png 836w, https:\/\/blogs.thinmanager.com\/thinclients\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Screen-Shot-2012-07-31-at-12.20.44-PM-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 836px) 100vw, 836px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">In a ThinManager Network the clients AND their connection to the Terminal Servers are managed (Indicated by blue rings)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ThinManager, however, manages both the end user clients as well as their connection to the centralized server\/device.\u00a0 This architecture is what allows for our unprecedented user functionality while still providing centralized network management.\u00a0 Do not be fooled.\u00a0 Deployment and delivery of applications to an end user client IS NOT client management.\u00a0 Here are a few examples of ThinManager client functions:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MultiSession\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9yiLSeYTQM8\" target=\"_blank\">MultiSession:<\/a> \u00a0 \u00a0Our MultiSession core technology allows multiple sessions running anywhere on the ThinManager network to be viewed through one thin client.\u00a0 ThinManager can &#8220;tile&#8221; these screen views based on your settings. You can dictate which tile shows which session. You can set it to run in screensaver mode so that certain &#8220;tiles&#8221; are constantly updated with different sessions. Multisession allows you to view displays from different applications on the same monitor.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MultiMonitor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thinmanager.com\/products\/multimonitor.php\" target=\"_blank\">MultiMonitor: <\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 This feature can be used to span sessions across monitors and\/or run individual sessions on each monitor. Touch screens are also supported, and if using a keyboard, the single keyboard entry follows the mouse focus. &#8220;Sliding&#8221; the mouse off the edge of one screen moves it onto the adjacent screen.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Shadowing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thinmanager.com\/products\/features.php\" target=\"_blank\">Shadowing: <\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0ThinManager allows ThinManager Ready thin clients to be &#8220;shadowed&#8221; from within ThinManager.
