MailBag Friday (#15)

Every Friday, we dedicate this space to sharing solutions for some of the most frequently asked questions posed to our ThinManager Technical Support team.  This weekly feature will help educate ThinManager users and provide them with answers to questions they may have about licenses, installation, integration, deployment, upgrades, maintenance, and daily operation.  Great technical support is an essential part of the ThinManager platform, and we are constantly striving to make your environment as productive and efficient as possible.

Q-   I am having difficulty using the USB to VGA adapter. When I try to use it, I get the following message: “Warning: Monitor 2 not found or invalid video mode”. The Thin Clients I have are Wyse C10LE and are Dual Monitor and the USB to VGA Adapters are StarTech USB2VGAPRO which have the Displaylink DL-195 chipset.

A – The USB to VGA adapter works on a single monitor unit.   If you add it to a dual monitor unit the USB to VGA will take the place of the second unit. To get 3 screens on a dual thin client you need to add 2 USB to VGA units.

Q- We are in the process of setting up a system with 5 terminal servers and 32 Thin Clients.  My question is, how many CAL’s and or TSCAL’s will I need? ?

A – If you have 32 thin clients you will need 32 ThinManager licenses, 32 Microsoft TS/RDS CALS*, and 32 regular Microsoft CALs, plus what ever application licenses are required.  It doesn’t matter how many terminal servers you have since the ThinManager license applies to the thin client.

*Server 2003 and 2008 use the term Terminal Services Client Access License, or TS CAL.

*Server 2008 R2 uses the term Remote Desktop Services Client Access License, or RDS CAL.

Q- We are having some issues with ThinManager after upgrading to Windows Server 2008.  Is there any documentation about issues caused by switching from 2003 to 2008?

A – The link below is our Server 2008 set up tips.  Hopefully it addresses the compatibility issues you are experiencing.

Q-  I’m experiencing problems with service on my PC using a ThinManager iTMC connection from iPad.  I turned off firewalls and virus protection but still could not connect.  I also have a Wyse server loaded, is there a potential conflict?

A – You need to have the ThinServer Proxy installed on any ThinManager server that you want to connect to.   You can find it here: http://thinmanager.com/ios/iosProxy1.php
