MailBag Friday (#17)

Every Friday, we dedicate this space to sharing solutions for some of the most frequently asked questions posed to our ThinManager Technical Support team.  This weekly feature will help educate ThinManager users and provide them with answers to questions they may have about licenses, installation, integration, deployment, upgrades, maintenance, and daily operation.  Great technical support is an essential part of the ThinManager platform, and we are constantly striving to make your environment as productive and efficient as possible.

Q-  We are currently using Contec IPC-BX955D –DC500 clients.  We have had no issue with their performance, but we have some remote locations where the basic PXE is not a viable solution.  We like the Intel Atom platform and would like to find a comparable ThinManager ready thin client that already has the boot loader onboard . Any suggestions?

A – Our recommended client based on your criteria would be the Advantech Uno-2173A.  It has a single VGA out and is only slightly bigger.  Aside from the display and size, they are very similar. If you have any flexibility in your processor choice, we can point you in the direction of any number of comparable ThinManager ready thin clients.

Q- When we came down to the training at the 6.0 launch event you were using a USB to VGA adapter to support a multi monitor display from a thin client with a single VGA out.  Do you have a list of supported USB to VGA adapters?  Also, one of our customers is adopting the TermSecure function and we need a supported provider for an RFID reader using a USB connection. Can you point us in a good direction?

A – ThinManager currently supports any USB to VGA adapter that uses a DL-195 chipset.  If you are looking to use an RFID reader we recommend the RFIdeas pcProx Enroll Series 81 readers which are supported by ThinManager.    Please note, the TermSecure function will not work with a “keyboard wedge”.  It will only work with specific RFID readers.

Q- What are the requirements for running a Redundant ThinManager 6.0 XLi solution if we were to install in a VMware environment?  How much memory, type, processor speed, and disk space are required to set up a ThinServer?

A – The minimum system requirements for the operating system are generally enough for ThinManager as well.  One processor core, 250MB of hard disk space, and 128MB of available memory.  Also, ff these machines are also going to be a terminal server, you will need to plan for additional resources for each session.
